Open Letter to the Chancellor of UC Davis

To UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi

As a citizen of the State of California and an alumnus of its public university system, I insist that you immediately resign your position as chancellor of UC Davis. When students are assaulted and tortured on campus by officials of the State, and irrefutable and obvious evidence has been publicized, the formation of a task force is an absurd and pathetic response. You are ultimately personally responsible for the acts of insensate brutality committed on Friday. No task force is likely to find otherwise.

That you chose not to summarily fire those directly involved proves that you lack the character to continue in your position, let alone to serve as an academic leader in troubled times.

It should be noted that use of pepper spray except in self defense is a felony in California, and a violation of civil rights subjecting the persons and agencies responsible to civil action under Federal law.

The people of this state do not have to conscience such acts, and we do not have to tolerate your continuing presence in a position of public authority. Accordingly, your services are no longer needed. You’re fired. Please clean out your desk now and take Police Chief Annette Spicuzza, Lt. John Pike, and all the officers who attacked the students with you when you go.
